WordPress chat
How do you add an AI chatbot to a WordPress site?
To add an AI chatbot to a WordPress site, paste a single line of code into the footer scripts area, in your theme or in a code plugin: a Muzau agent's bubble appears, with no chat plugin. The agent shows that it is an AI and answers on its own with what your company's Brain knows. What it does not know, it passes to your team with the visitor's contact details, if you chose that.
Why a chatbot on WordPress often stays a project
On WordPress, the reflex is to look for a chat plugin. You have to pick it, set it up, keep it updated, and often go through the person who manages the site. Meanwhile, the question of a visitor who arrived in the evening goes unanswered, and their request goes elsewhere.
The Muzau chat is not installed like a plugin: it is one line of code, and WordPress can host it in several places. Choosing the right one keeps a theme update from wiping it out. Your team keeps the relationship and the appointments; the chat answers alongside it.
How the agent goes about it
- Input
- One line of code pasted into WordPress, once
- It does
- Answers visitors in a bubble, only on the addresses you declared
- It delivers
- Answers in a few seconds, and to your team the requests it cannot handle
One line of code, no chat plugin
Muzau gives you one line to paste once, just before the end of the page, in the area meant for scripts or custom code. On the site side, there is nothing else to install: no chat plugin, no server, no account to create. The chat is a separate agent, which you create and set up in Muzau, not in the WordPress admin.
A ready-made message for the person who manages your WordPress
If a contractor looks after your site, send them the ready-made message that Muzau prepares. On the WordPress side, a content security policy (CSP) is often set by a security plugin or by the host: it must allow the script's address, for scripts and connections, as well as inline styles.
The bubble on your addresses, staging included
The Muzau chat bubble appears on your site's address, with or without "www.", and on the ones you add, such as your host's staging site. Declare the staging site before testing there: anywhere else, the line shows nothing.
What the chat answers on your WordPress site
The Muzau chat answers on its own, in a few seconds, with what your company's Brain knows and the pages of your site that Muzau has read. After you change your pages, the "Read my whole site again" button restarts the reading; what Muzau takes from it waits for your approval. For the rest, appointments included, see answering your site's visitors at any hour.
Where to paste a script in WordPress, and how to check
A chat script is pasted once, in an area shared by all pages. WordPress offers several: pick the one that survives updates.
- Your theme's field. Many themes and page builders have a "footer scripts" or "custom code" setting. It is the simplest. It survives theme updates, not a change of theme: paste the line again then.
- A code insertion plugin. Without that field, a plugin that adds code to the header and footer does the job: choose the footer. It also survives a change of theme.
- The footer.php file of a child theme. The line goes just before the closing body tag. In the parent theme, an update would overwrite it. A block theme does not have this file: use one of the two previous options.
- Not in a single page's block. In a "Custom HTML" block, the line only applies to that page.
Once the line is pasted:
- Clear the cache of your caching plugin or your host. If an optimization plugin bundles or delays scripts and the bubble does not appear, exclude this line from the optimization.
- Check while logged out of WordPress, in a private window: logged in, you often see a page that bypasses the cache.
- Check the site language under Settings, then General: WordPress writes it into every page, and the Muzau chat interface follows it, in French or English.
- On WordPress.com, adding code depends on the plan: check that it allows you to add a plugin or a script.
What the chat should know before going live is prepared separately: see putting a chatbot on your company's website, and a chat's privacy policy.
What it does not do
- It is not a WordPress plugin: nothing is set up from the site admin, everything is set up in Muzau.
- The bubble does not appear on an undeclared address, staging included: declare it before trying the chat there.
- It does not receive files and your team does not write in the bubble: the handover happens by email or by phone.
Autonomous does not mean unchecked. You set the level of autonomy of every agent, its limits cannot be crossed, everything it does is recorded in a plain-language log, and one gesture stops it all.
Frequently asked questions
- Do you need a WordPress plugin to add an AI chat?
- No. The Muzau chat fits in one line of code pasted once into the footer scripts area. A code insertion plugin can be used to paste it if your theme has no field for it, but no chat plugin needs to be installed or kept up to date.
- How do you test a chatbot on a WordPress staging site?
- First declare the staging site's address in Muzau: the bubble only appears on declared addresses. You can also try the chat in Muzau, before putting it on a site, without any appointment being booked or any email sent.
- Can a chatbot follow the language of a bilingual WordPress site?
- Yes, in French and English. The Muzau chat interface follows the language the page declares, and its answers follow the language the visitor writes in. Other languages are not supported.
- Does the chatbot know the new pages of my WordPress site?
- Not necessarily all of them. Muzau's Brain reads your site again about once a week, up to 12 pages per reading, starting with those that carry the useful facts (prices, offers, FAQ, terms, contact), and the "Read my whole site again" button restarts the reading on demand. What it takes from a changed page waits for your approval before entering the Brain.
- Does the chatbot work if my WordPress site has a content security policy?
- Yes, if that policy (CSP) allows the Muzau script's address for scripts and connections, as well as inline styles. The message that Muzau prepares for the person who manages your site reminds them of this.
